Cognition in aging and age-related disease

چکیده
Chapter Synopsis Aging can have diverse effects on cognitive function. For many people, aging is associated with relatively little cognitive decline ( “healthy” or “successful” aging). For some, memory declines significantly with age, but does not prevent performance of daily activities ( “mild cognitive impairment”). For others, aging is associated with severe cognitive deficits that impede the ability to live independently (“dementia”). This chapter discusses the cognitive changes that accompany healthy aging and the theories put forth to explain them. These age-related declines are then contrasted with the ones that characterize mild cognitive impairment and dementia of the Alzheimer’s type.

Comparing the perception of patterns of aging in adolescents and young adults based on grounded theory
Objectives: The present study was conducted in order to compare the perceptions of aging between young and adolescent individuals. The perception of aging is defined as the individual’s perception of one’s aging in their socio-cultural context. This concept subsumes all aspects of consciousness, perception, experience, assessment, interpretation, and cognition related to the process of aging. ...
متن کاملCognitive profile and determinants of poor cognition in people without dementia in Parkinson’s disease
Background: The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) has been recommended as a cognitive screening tool for clinical practice and research in Parkinson’s disease (PD), yet no normative data have been published for MoCA in PD without dementia. Methods: We undertook a pooled secondary analysis of data from two studies (one cross-sectional design and one clinical trial) conducted in the East ...
متن کاملImpact of epigenetics in aging and age related neurodegenerative diseases.
Epigenetics involves multiple processes such as DNA methylation, histone code modifications, and noncoding RNAs to regulate gene expression. In recent years the implications of epigenetic mechanisms have emerged in the field of neuroscience especially in brain development, memory, learning, and various cognition processes. Epigenetics also plays a pivotal role during the aging process of the br...
متن کاملNormal Age-Related Alterations on Distal Radius Radiography
Background: The present study was designed to ascertain serial changes on distal radius radiographic parameters attributable to aging. Methods: In this prospective study, the sample consisted of 120 healthy individuals who were divided into four age groups each containing 15 males and 15 females. In the two below-20-year-old groups, only ulnar variance could be investigated. Wrist radio...
متن کاملThe effect of cognitive therapy on cognition in elderly people with Alzheimer's disease: A review article
Introduction and purpose: Elderly people often face cognitive problems due to the aging process. Decreased ability in cognitive functions leads to impaired performance in daily activities of judgment, attention, and awareness. Therefore, this study investigates different cognitive therapies on cognition in elderly people with Alzheimer's disease. Materials and Methods: Prisma method was used i...

BACKGROUND White matter lesions (WMLs) are prevalent in nondemented aging and in Alzheimer disease (AD). Their relationship with cognition in the earliest stages of AD is unknown. OBJECTIVE To assess the relationship between WMLs and cognition in nondemented aging and in early-stage AD. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. SETTING Alzheimer Disease Research Center, St Louis, MO.
